THE CAMPAIGN
Two Distinct Destinations, One Connected Journey
Japan’s Heart and Spirit brought Tokyo and Wakayama together as complementary parts of a single trip through Japan.
The campaign combined the energy, culture and layered neighbourhoods of Tokyo with Wakayama’s sacred landscapes, natural beauty and enduring traditions, encouraging travellers to experience both destinations as part of a richer journey.
Our role was to produce the photography supporting a series of BBC StoryWorks articles and travel itineraries across both regions.
THE BRIEF
Turning Editorial Stories Into a Production Plan
Working from the planned articles and itineraries, we developed a list of locations and experiences that could bring each story to life visually.
The selection needed to support the individual themes while creating a consistent connection between Tokyo and Wakayama. Rather than treating the destinations as unrelated locations, the photography was planned as one cohesive body of work.
THE APPROACH
Location Research, Access and Production
We researched locations across both regions, coordinating directly with venues and local organisations and authorities.
NOUS managed the location fixing, photography permissions and signed location releases for locations in Tokyo.
This allowed the production to move efficiently while ensuring that the final assets could be used confidently across the campaign.
PHOTOGRAPHY DIRECTION
Story-Led Destination Photography
The photography was designed to inspire travellers while avoiding the crowded depictions often associated with major tourism destinations.
We used carefully selected viewpoints, controlled timing and human moments to create images with a stronger sense of story and atmosphere.
Each location was photographed in a way that supported the editorial narrative while remaining authentic to the experience of being there.
THE RESULT
A Connected Visual Journey
The completed photography gave BBC StoryWorks a cohesive image library spanning two very different sides of Japan.
Together, the images presented Tokyo and Wakayama not as competing destinations, but as a connected journey through the energy, culture, nature and spiritual character of the country.
